Student Information
Housing
All students will be housed in double (shared) rooms in the same building on campus. For 2012, APTLII will be housed in Philips Hall, located on the western side of campus on the shore of Lake Mendota (map). If you know another APTLII participant and would like to request them as your roommate, please contact the APTLII office.
The rooms measure approximately 16' by 16' and include a private bathroom in each resident room, two single beds (with sheets, blankets, and a pillow), desks, a mini-fridge, and air conditioning. You will need to bring your own towels. Washers and dryers are located in the building ($2/wash, dryers free). Bedding can be exchanged once per week at the front desk.
Please note: There is no wireless network in the UW-Madison dorms. Student rooms are wired with Ethernet, and you will need to supply your own Ethernet cable to use your computer in your room. Cables can also be purchased at the front desk. You will be able to connect to the campus wireless network in the public areas inside Philips Hall, at classroom buildings, and at libraries.
Meals
The majority of your meals will be eaten in one of the University dining facilities near the APTLII residence hall. Students are given an electronic meal card to swipe upon entrance to the cafeteria. Other meals will include catered food at the APTLII residence hall, trips to local restaurants, picnics, etc. Group meals, conducted in your target language, are part of the APTLII immersion experience and there are no facilities for students to prepare their own meals. Meal service includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner each weekday, with brunch and dinner on the weekends.
Parking
Hourly parking on campus is very limited and very expensive! If you know you will be bringing a vehicle to campus for the summer, you must purchase a parking permit in advance. Permits must be purchased directly from UW Transportation Services using this form and cost $150. Your parking permit will be waiting for you at the front desk when you check in. If you do not purchase a permit in advance, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to purchase short-term passes from UW Transportation.
Textbooks and Incidentals
Tentative textbook information for each language is included on the Courses page. On average, students spend around $100 for textbooks each summer. Depending on your course, textbooks will either be available at the University Bookstore, 711 State Street (on Library Mall) or at the APTLII office in Ingraham Hall. If your course is using a photocopied reader, it will be available at the office as well.
Even though the program includes 3 meals a day each weekday (brunch and dinner on weekends), students should plan to bring along, or have access to, extra spending money. You might want to head over to the Babcock Hall Dairy Store for ice cream, or meet your classmates down at the Union Terrace for a study session.
Getting to Campus
Please see the UW Visitor and Information site for different ways to reach Madison and campus. Note that it may be cheaper to fly to Milwaukee (MKE) or Chicago (ORD), and then take the Badger Bus (Milwaukee) or Van Galder bus (Chicago) to campus.
For students flying directly to Madison, taxis are available at the north end of the terminal (Door #7) to take you from the airport to campus. It is approximately a 20 minute ride. Philips Hall is located at 1950 Willow Drive, behind the Natatorium and Lakeshore Hall.
