Application for APTLII 2017

Apply early! Applications received after February 1 have a $25 fee.

Please follow all instructions carefully and complete all sections. As part of the selection process, we may request a phone conversation with you. Applicants may not apply to study more than one language.

Please remember that this is an immersion program and as a participant you will sign an agreement to communicate in only your language of study during the entire eight-week session. Beginning students will use a modified language protocol during the first weeks of the program. Participants will live on site for the entire eight weeks of the program. Please discuss any conflicts with the APTLII Coordinator before you apply.

  1. Complete this application form, including your personal statement and contact information for your 2 references. You will not be able to save and return to the application, so be prepared to fill it out completely in one sitting. Write your personal statement in a separate program ahead of time and cut-and-paste it into this form.
  2. Download the Recommendation Form and give a copy to both of your references, asking them to submit their letters of recommendation and language evaluation forms to us directly.
  3. Send APTLII one transcript from each institution of higher education you have attended, scanned/electronic versions are welcome in lieu of paper copies.
  4. If you have any questions about the application process, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions page first. If you need additional help, contact Alicia Wright, APTLII Coordinator, at or (608) 262-5666. Two letters of recommendation are required as part of your application. Applicants with no background in their target language are encouraged to have a teacher of another foreign language submit one of the letters, whereas those who have studied their target language formally should have their instructor submit one of the letters.

For those who do not have a relevant language reference, students should ask for a second letter from someone who is aware of their current academic progress. Educators and professionals may request letters from persons best qualified to give a meaningful appraisal.

Please list your referees below with their institutional affiliations, mailing address, and official email address.

Please give a printed or electronic copy of the Recommendation Form to each of your referees and ask them to return it to us along with their letter of recommendation as soon as possible.

I hereby waive my right to read the completed letters and recommendation forms. I understand they will only be used for reviewing my application to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arabic, Persian, and Turkish Language Immersion Institute.
